Alabama High School Athletic Association Heat Stress Exercise Restrictions (AHSAA, 2024) — Heat Stress Alert Levels

Alabama High School Athletic Association mandated activity modifications for middle-school and high-school practices in a hot environment: WBGT bands (preferred) or, when no WBGT meter is available, heat-index bands set rest breaks, practice-duration caps, football equipment limits and no outdoor practice at the top level. An athletics overlay, not an occupational work/rest rule.

Check a reading against this rule

This rule has no numeric trigger the calculator evaluates — it states duties and control measures rather than a threshold a reading can be checked against. Its measures are listed below.

Programmable logic

Converts WBGT to Fahrenheit (rounded to 0.1) and bands it: under 82.2 normal activities with at least 3 rest breaks/h of 3 min; 82.2-87.0 discretion for intense or prolonged exercise with 3 breaks/h of 4 min; 87.1-90.0 2 h practice cap with 4 breaks/h of 4 min and football limited to helmet, shoulder pads and shorts; 90.1-92.0 1 h cap with 20 min of rest breaks in the hour, football no protective equipment and no conditioning; above 92.0 no outdoor workouts.

The printed gaps (82.2 between '< 82.2' and '82.3', 92.0-92.1 before '> 92.1') are assigned to the higher level.

WBGT governs whenever supplied; otherwise the heat index is banded: under 91 lower (3 breaks/h of 4 min); 91 to under 103 moderate (2 h cap, 4 breaks/h of 4 min, football helmet/shoulder pads/shorts, all equipment off for conditioning); 103-125 high (1 h cap, 20 min of breaks, football helmets only); above 125 no outdoor practice (printed 'Greater than 126-136', encoded at the most protective reading).
