Kentucky High School Athletic Association Heat Index / WBGT Guidelines (KHSAA Form GE20) — Heat Stress Alert Levels

Kentucky High School Athletic Association Form GE20 heat index / WBGT scale for high-school practices and contests: four bands that set water and rest breaks, practice-duration caps, re-check intervals, football / boys' lacrosse equipment limits and stopping outside activity. An athletics overlay, not an occupational work/rest rule.

Check a reading against this rule

This rule has no numeric trigger the calculator evaluates — it states duties and control measures rather than a threshold a reading can be checked against. Its measures are listed below.

Programmable logic

Converts WBGT to Fahrenheit (rounded to 0.1) and bands it: 86.9 and below band 1; 87.0-89.9 band 2; 90.0-91.9 band 3; 92 or over stop. Heat index bands: under 95 band 1; 95-99 band 2; above 99 to 104 band 3; above 104 stop. When both are supplied the more severe band applies.

Band 1 water always available, optional 10 min group water breaks every 30 min, multiple rest breaks each hour of at least 4 min, re-check every 30 min if rising; band 2 mandatory 10 min water breaks every 30 min out of direct sun, 2 h practice cap, football / boys' lacrosse remove helmets and equipment when not directly involved and all protective equipment for conditioning; band 3 1 h practice cap with at least 20 min of breaks, re-check every 15 min, football / boys' lacrosse suspend practice or competition if protective equipment is required, no protective equipment and no conditioning; stop band: stop all outside activity, and inside activity if air conditioning is unavailable.

The procedure applies until the temperature is below 84 F; monitoring continues at an ambient temperature of 83 F or higher.
